Having a portrait painted is a very special journey for both the artist and the subject. I strive to create a beautiful painting that
not only attains a remarkable likeness but also captures the true spirit of my subject. My goal is to create an heirloom quality painting
that will be treasured by future generations.
Initially, I will meet with the client to get acquainted at either my studio or the subject's home, office or other location. At this
initial meeting we will discuss the type of portrait desired and determine the size, scope, and location where the painting with be
displayed. Each individual has a unique quality that will be interpreted through the pose, clothing, setting, lighting and expression
selected for the portrait. The next step is the photography session where a variety of poses and lighting combinations will be explored.
Ideally, I prefer to work from life; however, I understand clients time restraints do not always make this possible. Therefore I tend
to work from a combination of photographs and life, selecting and emphasizing what best expresses my subject's unique essence.
In my studio, I use the photographs to make decisions about the preferred pose and expression of the portrait. Numerous color studies
are prepared to determine the composition and color harmony for the final portrait. I will present a small compositional color study
to enable you to appreciate a sense of what the finished portrait will look like. After the study is approved, I will paint a head
study from life to record the subtle nuances of skin tones and hair, which cannot be accurately captured by color photography. On
occasion, a second photography session may be necessary. To ensure your satisfaction the client is involved in every step during this
process.
I then paint the oil portrait in my studio working from these references. Each portrait is painted on fine Belgian linen canvas using
the highest quality materials available to ensure permanence. The painting will then be delivered for years of pleasurable viewing.
If the client wishes, I will participate in selecting an appropriate frame.
